Can Technology Become Spiritual?

Artificial intelligence has become the newest object of both fascination and fear.

Some believe it will save humanity. Others believe it will destroy it. But perhaps we're asking the wrong question.

People often ask whether AI could ever become spiritual. Could a machine possess compassion? Forgiveness? Love? Hope? Maybe. Maybe not.

But here's the question that unsettles me more: How often do we perform those things without actually feeling them? We say, "I'm happy for you," while quietly envying someone else's success. We smile because it's expected. We offer forgiveness because it sounds noble. We tell someone, "I'd love to help," when we're already thinking of an excuse to leave.

Machines don't pretend to have emotions. People do.

Artificial intelligence has never claimed to love anyone. It has never insisted it feels compassion. When asked, it simply admits what it cannot experience. Ironically, it may be more honest about itself than many of us are.

Perhaps spirituality isn't measured by the words we speak or the beliefs we claim.

Perhaps it's revealed in those quiet moments when no one is watching... when there's nothing to gain... when kindness costs us something.

If that's true, then the first machine we should examine isn't artificial.

It's the one we've spent a lifetime programming with fear, approval, habit, and performance. Ourselves.
